EPL: ‘This is unacceptable’ – Ian Wright slams Maresca over decision on Moises Caicedo

Published on May 15, 2025 at 05:28 AM

Former Arsenal star, Ian Wright has hit hard on Chelsea boss, Enzo Maresca, for playing midfielder, Moises Caicedo out of position at Chelsea.

Wright wondered why the Italian uses the Ecuadorian midfielder in the right-back position instead of the middle of the pitch.

The midfielder was played out of position on Sunday as the Blues fell 2-0 in the hands of Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Speaking on The Kelly & Wrighty podcast, Wright said that Maresca already has natural right-backs in the persons of Reece James and Malo Gusto.

He insisted that playing Caicedo at the right of the field is not acceptable as he is not good enough to play at that position.

He said via Metro, “It is crazy when you look at who Enzo Maresca has got on the bench and he’s still doing that [playing Caicedo at right-back].

“Teams are going to attack him all the time. Whatever he’s saying about getting into midfield and controlling it, you’ve got to get control of the game. It all comes down to the manager.

“Unless something has happened with Reece James and Malo Gusto, I don’t know what’s happened. That, for me, is unacceptable... He’s making decisions that are very worrying, especially in that particular incident.”;;

Meanwhile, Caicedo has played at right-back for Chelsea in multiple games, even under Mauricio Pochettino.
